Bettina Bussmann studied Philosophy and Economics at the LMU Munich and the University of Pennsylvania. After completing her Master's degree with a work on Frege she withdrew from academic life to devote herself to raising her two children and working as a teacher for philosophy. Convinced that philosophical thinking must be a central component in school education she re-entered academia and, in 2014, graduated with a doctoral thesis on science-oriented philosophy education. She has been a professor for Philosophy and Philosophy Education at the Department of Philosophy (GW) at the University of Salzburg since 2014. She is editor of the book series Philosophische Bildung in Schule und Hochschule and co-editor for the Zeitschrift für die Didaktik der Philosophie und Ethik (ZDPE). In her latest work she develops conceptual models and material to determine what epistemic competencies are and how to effectively train them. She also works on spreading philosophizing with children.
